Dental Fillings

Rendering of teeth with 3 filling materials.Fillings are not necessarily a bad thing they help restore the health of your tooth, allowing you to keep your natural tooth, which should be your ultimate goal. At SmileCOS Dentistry, we are proud to offer our patients a variety of options for fillings to meet their dental and cosmetic needs.

What are Fillings?

Dental fillings help restore a damaged tooth. The damage could occur from decay or an accident. Either way, your tooth’s enamel is compromised and needs help. If you have a damaged tooth, it is less than secure and needs a filling. We do offer more than the traditional silver filling today (although they still have their uses). If you worry about the cosmetic appearance of fillings, talk to us about composite fillings - a tooth-colored filling that blends in with your natural teeth. Our dentists can help you choose the type of filling that is right for your mouth.

What’s the Process?

Many people fear the filling process because they think it will be painful. At our office, our dentists ensure your 100 percent comfort throughout the entire process. We start by numbing the area with an anesthetic. Depending on the area that needs filling, we may administer anesthetic in your gums, cheeks, or the roof of your mouth. We go slow and gentle with this process, ensuring that you cannot feel anything once the anesthetic takes effect.

Once your mouth is numb, we remove the decayed part of the tooth. With composite fillings, we can use an abrasive tool to remove the decay as we do not have to remove as much of the tooth as is necessary with amalgam fillings. After removing the decay, our dentists thoroughly clean the tooth to remove all bacteria before filling it. Ensuring a clean tooth helps prevent the risk of infection down the road.

Finally, we fill the tooth with the dental composite material. The filling seals the tooth, preventing any further decay of the remaining enamel. The dental filling helps build the tooth back up so that you can go back to your normal routine, including chewing your favorite foods. No one will even know that you have a filling because the composite matches your tooth enamel perfectly.

The Important Role of Fillings

Fillings lay an integral role in the health of your mouth. You only get one chance at your natural teeth. If you have decay in your mouth and you leave it untreated, the decay will eventually affect the tooth’s roots. You would then need a root canal and possibly even lose the tooth. A filling helps fix the problem at the first sign of decay, ensuring that you can keep your natural tooth and as much of the enamel as possible for optimal oral health moving forward.
