At SmileCOS Dentistry, our Colorado Springs dentists offer our patients the option of Invisalign, invisible aligners that provide results as good as traditional braces provide. Learn more about clear aligners vs. traditional braces.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works differently than traditional braces. With traditional braces, we place brackets and wires on your teeth that remain in place for 12 months to several years, depending on your needs.

Invisalign, on the other hand, has aligners that look like a plastic retainer that you replace every few weeks. You may wear Invisalign for a year or two, depending on how much work your teeth require.

Because you can remove the aligners, the success of the treatment depends on your cooperation. We provide you with the aligner that you must wear for a week or two.

You may or may not notice changes in your teeth during this time, because the changes are gradual, but consistently wearing the aligners all day except when you eat and brush your teeth will provide the best results.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

Our dentists in Colorado Springs are experts in Invisalign and can help you determine if you are a good candidate for them.

We start the process with a consultation and x-rays so that our dentists can get a close-up look at the structure of your mouth. Once we decide that aligners will help correct misalignment, we will take impressions of your teeth. Our lab uses these impressions to create customized aligners that will fix your misalignment.

Our Colorado Springs dentists, Dr. Andrew Miller and Dr.Francisco Darquea work closely with the lab creating the perfect plan to straighten your teeth in the shortest amount of time possible.

How do I Care for and Clean Invisalign?

Before you get Invisalign, it is important to know how to care for them. Just like with traditional braces, you need to use proper oral hygiene habits to limit the risk of decay and gum disease that could occur if you leave debris and bacteria in the aligners.

Just like you should brush your teeth twice a day before Invisalign, you should do the same with Invisalign. You will remove the aligners before you eat.

If you can, we recommend brushing your teeth right after eating and before replacing the aligners. If you cannot brush your teeth after eating, at the very least, swish your mouth out with water to remove any debris that would end up in the aligners.

It is also important to wash the aligners daily to remove any debris or bacteria that build up when wearing them. This will help decrease the risk of disease or infection from wearing the aligners.

Invisalign FAQs

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of each case. On average, treatment can take between 12 to 18 months. Your dentist will provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific dental needs during your consultation.

What are the benefits of Invisalign compared to traditional braces?

Invisalign offers several benefits over traditional braces, including:- Aesthetic appeal: The clear aligners are nearly invisible.- Comfort: Aligners are smooth and less likely to irritate gums and cheeks.- Convenience: They are removable, allowing for easier eating, brushing, and flossing.- Predictability: The treatment plan is designed using advanced digital technology, providing a clear picture of the expected results.

Can I eat and drink with Invisalign?

You should remove your Invisalign aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent staining and damage to the aligners. After eating, it’s important to brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners to maintain oral hygiene and prevent food particles from being trapped.

How often do I need to wear Invisalign aligners?

For optimal results, Invisalign aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day. They should only be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Consistent wear is crucial for the aligners to effectively move your teeth according to the treatment plan.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

Some patients may experience a slight lisp or changes in speech when they first start wearing Invisalign aligners. However, this is usually temporary, and most people adapt within a few days to a week as they get used to the aligners.

What happens if I lose an Invisalign aligner?

If you lose an Invisalign aligner, contact your dentist immediately. They may recommend that you move on to the next set of aligners or wear a previous set until a replacement can be made. It's important to address the issue promptly to avoid disrupting your treatment progress.

Can Invisalign fix all types of orthodontic issues?

Invisalign is effective for treating many common orthodontic issues, such as crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. However, severe or complex cases may require traditional braces or other orthodontic treatments. Your dentist will determine the best treatment option for your specific needs during your consultation.

How often do I need to visit the dentist during Invisalign treatment?

During Invisalign treatment, you will typically visit your dentist every 6 to 8 weeks for check-ups. These appointments allow your dentist to monitor your progress and ensure that the treatment is progressing as planned. They may also provide you with the next sets of aligners during these visits.

What should I do after completing Invisalign treatment?

After completing Invisalign treatment, you will need to wear retainers to maintain the new position of your teeth. Retainers prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions and help preserve your newly aligned smile. Your dentist will provide you with instructions on how often to wear your retainers.
