Periodontal Care
Colorado Springs, CO

Diagram of periodontitis and health tooth at SmileCOS Dentistry in Colorado Springs, COAccording to the CDC, almost 50 percent of Americans have some form of gum disease. With proper periodontal care, though, you can reverse the disease and get your oral health back in order. At SmileCOS Dentistry, we are proud to offer top-quality periodontal care to help you avoid the tooth loss, heart disease, respiratory issues, and diabetes that gum disease may cause if left untreated.

A Proper Cleaning

Our periodontal care starts with a professional cleaning and dental exam. During this appointment, our dentists will determine the condition of your gums. If we notice sizeable pockets in your gums (the area between your teeth and bone), we will measure the depth of them, and if the pockets measure more than 3 mm, we may recommend a more thorough cleaning called scaling and root planing.

Scaling and Root Planing

The name sounds scary, but the procedure is minimally invasive and effective. Scaling and root planing is another word for deep cleaning. While we do have to administer anesthetic, the recovery from scaling and root planing are easy, and our dentists conduct the procedure with the gentleness that you desire.

During the procedure, our dentists scale beneath the gumline, removing all plaque and bacteria build-up that accumulated. We also use this opportunity to conduct root planing or smoothing out the roots, helping them recover from the inflammation caused by the disease. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, we may do the procedure in multiple appointments, cleaning one quadrant of your mouth at a time.

After Scaling and Root Planing

Once we administer a deep cleaning, we typically recommend that our patients come in for a cleaning four times a year, instead of just two times. This allows us to stay ahead of the plaque and tartar buildup. This way, you can avoid the need for scaling and root planing in the future. After a few appointments, we can reassess the situation to determine if you still need cleanings as frequently.

Proper Dental Hygiene is Crucial

It’s important that you practice proper oral hygiene before receiving a diagnosis of gum disease, but it becomes even more important afterward. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day can help eliminate the bacteria in your mouth that eventually turns into plaque.

It’s also important to rinse your mouth out after you eat and keep your regular dental appointments. If you wait until your gums start bleeding or worse yet, receding, you could end up with advanced-stage gum disease that can lead to a referral to a periodontist.

We are here to help you stay on top of your oral health. If we notice the signs of gum disease, we will take the necessary steps right away to avoid any further issues. With proper and immediate treatment, it is possible to reverse gingivitis and give you a new lease on your oral health.
