Thorough dental exams every six months helps identify any potential dental health issues in its earliest stages. At SmileCOS Dentistry, we encourage you to keep your semi-annual dental appointments to ensure your optimal oral health.
What Happens During a Dental Exam?
First, know that dental exams are non-invasive. Our dentists use this opportunity to get a thorough look at your mouth, looking closely at any potential issues we find. Your first dental exam with us serves as the baseline. At future appointments, we compare your current exam to the baseline exam, looking for any obvious changes or issues.
The exam itself is verbal as well as physical. Our dentists ask pointed questions regarding your current dental health, any issues you had in the past, and about any family history of dental health issues. We use the answers to these questions to fuel our exam, paying close attention to any areas of concern that you mention.
The Parts of the Exam
After we discuss your dental health, our dentists will physically evaluate your mouth. We look at each tooth, one at a time, using an explorer. This non-invasive procedure allows us to tell if any teeth are loose, decayed, or otherwise compromised. We also use this time to check any tooth restorations you have, such as bridges, crowns, or dental bonding.
Periodically (at least once a year), we recommend full-mouth digital x-rays so that we can get a full view of what’s going on in your mouth. Some issues, such as bone loss and root issues, only show up on x-rays; we cannot see them with the naked eye. Catching serious issues early helps minimize the invasiveness of the procedures to correct the issues.
Our dentists also use this opportunity to screen for gum disease. Using a periodontal probe, our dentists measure the depths of your pockets (the area between your teeth and bone). Any pockets measuring larger than 3 mm may need further attention. Gum disease caught early has a better chance of effective and non-invasive treatment, so do not skip this step.
The Oral Cancer Screening
The oral cancer screening plays an integral role in the dental exam. Oral cancer does not show symptoms right away, but our trained dentists can identify the signs early. This helps you get treatment immediately, increasing the chances of complete recovery from oral cancer.
Our dentists carefully evaluate the inside and outside of your mouth for any lesions or lumps. We also check your face, cheeks, neck, and throat for any signs of oral cancer. If we notice anything, we may recommend further testing to determine what steps to take.
Keeping up with your regular semi-annual dental exams is one of the best ways to stay in control of your dental health. Our dentists offer gentle, non-invasive exams that allow you to feel comfortable and in control while we determine the state of your oral health.
