The top of your teeth takes a lot of wear and tear. Sometimes the crown of your tooth may be damaged, but what’s underneath your gumline is still in good condition. If that’s the case, you want to save the tooth and you may be a great candidate for a dental crown. At SmileCOS Dentistry, we offer safe and effective treatment, providing our patients with dental crowns that look and feel realistic.
What is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns also go by the name dental cap. In other words, they cover the top of your tooth when the enamel wears down or becomes ineffective. Crowns help restore a tooth’s size or shape when dental fillings or dental bonding is not enough to keep the tooth intact.
We offer a variety of different types of crowns, but the most common are the porcelain crowns. Made in our lab, porcelain crowns look like your other teeth, allowing it to blend in with your mouth. No one will be able to tell the difference, allowing you to chew, talk, and smile without embarrassment.
Who Needs a Dental Crown?
Patients see us for dental crowns all of the time. Excessive decay that a filling cannot fix, fractured fillings, broken teeth, and teeth with root canals often need a dental crown. These teeth have had some type of trauma to the top of the tooth, while what is underneath the gumline remains in good health.
Receiving the Dental Crown
We complete the dental crown process in two appointments. At the first appointment, we prepare the tooth to receive the crown. This may involve removing decay or reshaping the tooth. We need to make sure the tooth itself is healthy before placing a cap on it. We also need to make sure it is in good shape so that the crown fits comfortably, giving you full use of your mouth.
After we prepare the tooth, we will take impressions of your mouth. We send the mold to our lab where they make a crown made for your tooth. The crown will match the color and shape of your other teeth so that it blends in well.
While we wait for your permanent crown to arrive, we will place a temporary cap on your tooth. This gives you use of your tooth, but use caution when eating excessively hard or sticky foods. After a week or two, the permanent crown will arrive, and we can place it on your tooth.
At the second appointment, we will clean the tooth and conduct any final preparations, including filing the enamel down, if necessary. We place the permanent crown and determine if it is a good fit. Together we ensure comfort and satisfaction with its appearance. Once we are sure it is a perfect fit, we permanently cement the crown to the tooth, giving you a fully functional tooth once again.
