Everything You Need To Know About Dental Fractures And Craze Lines
Posted on 3/21/2022 by SmileCOS Dentistry
Craze lines and fractures are two of many dental imperfections that can be very difficult to avoid. While these issues do not typically affect the health of your teeth, they can cause some cosmetic damage if left untreated for an extended period. Read on to learn more about what craze lines and fractures are and how we treat them in our practice.
What are craze lines and fractures?
Craze lines are tiny cracks that form in the enamel of your teeth. They only affect the surface layer, so they do not cause any damage or pain to your teeth. Fractures are similar to craze lines but also include deeper fissures within the tooth structure itself. These can lead to discomfort and may require more extensive treatment options than a simple filling would provide.
Both craze line fractures happen when there is too much stress on one part of a tooth's root system or crown due to biting forces, grinding, clenching/grinding habits, etc., over time which causes intense pressure & tension between upper & lower jaws (or top vs. bottom). The high force puts tremendous strain onto certain parts, creating a small crack or fracture that will develop into a visible line.
How can they be fixed?
The good news is that we can fix both craze lines and fractures! The first step in repairing a fracture or craze line will require a simple examination to assess the damage. If you have been experiencing pain, discomfort, sensitivity &/or other symptoms from your cracks or fractures, it's best to schedule an appointment as soon as possible so we can get started on treatment. In some cases, our doctors may recommend using unique bonding material for quick results at home until you're able to come into the office for more formal care. After examining the issue further, if there are no signs of infection involved, then next would be determining whether a tooth-colored filling (composite resin) vs. crown will work better based on each case and which one will be the best option for that particular case tooth.
Craze Lines and Fractures are two of many dental imperfections that can be very difficult to avoid when it comes to overall health & function of teeth, but also in terms of appearance, which is why early detection is vital! The longer you wait before scheduling an exam or if you ignore these issues altogether, they will only get worse, causing further fractures & cracks to develop, leading to pain/sensitivity/infection problems over time if not treated properly.
