Should You Ever Use More Toothpaste Than Normal?

Should You Ever Use More Toothpaste Than Normal? At SmileCOS Dentistry, we do not hear a lot of patients ask if toothpaste is necessary. It is the most widely accepted partner to a toothbrush when it comes to your daily tooth brushing routine. Your mouth, teeth, and gums are important for your overall picture of health. Consequently, is important to brush with a soft toothbrush, floss, and rinse your teeth and gums. This best practice helps to remove the bacteria in your mouth that can cause dental problems.

Toothpaste Quantities for Adults

Adults can comfortably fit a pea sized amount of toothpaste on their toothbrush. This is the amount that most toothpaste manufacturers advise on the back of the toothpaste tube. There is logic behind this quantity. It is important to have enough toothpaste to create bubbles which aid in cleaning. Having this amount also allows for an adequate amount of fluoride in the toothpaste to coat your teeth. Fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay.

If you use more than a pea sized amount, and you are an adult, it is not an issue. This is true primarily because adults do not have developing teeth. It will not cause damage if you smear extra toothpaste on your toothbrush, however, you will have to buy another tube sooner as a result. Using more toothpaste than normal does not bolster the benefits of brushing.

Brushing your teeth is key to maintaining healthy oral hygiene. Using toothpaste is a good idea to get rid of the bacteria which coats your teeth after you eat. Regardless of the brand, most toothpaste manufacturers advise a very small amount for children up to a pea sized amount for adults. Different guidelines apply for kids as they have developing teeth and bodies that are susceptible to excessive fluoride consumption.
