What Is a Mouthguard?

Posted on 4/12/2021 by SmileCOS Dentistry
What Is a Mouthguard?A mouthguard is an oral orthotic device that is designed to protect your teeth against any kind of trauma or teeth grinding. Mouthguards such as the ones produced in our office are custom-made using a mold of your smile. This patient-specific fitting process results in a mouthguard that offers superior protection and comfort.

Mouthguards are made from advanced polymer materials that are soft and durable. They are intended to be resistant to wear while also being comfortable to wear for long periods. The exact combination of materials used in a mouthguard will depend on what the guard is being used for.

Are There Different Types of Mouthguards?

There are several different types of mouthguards available, but they can be lumped into two broad categories, which are sports and nighttime mouthguards. A sports mouthguard is intended to protect your teeth from trauma and impact that can result when engaged in recreational activity.

A nighttime mouthguard is used to treat a variety of conditions, such as sleep apnea or teeth grinding. The shape and configuration of a mouthguard will change slightly between sports and nighttime applications, but the fitting process is very similar.

How Long Do Mouthguards Last?

The lifespan of a custom mouthguard will vary depending on its application and what condition it is being used to treat. A sports mouthguard will last approximately six months or one sports season, according to Healthline. Using a sports mouthguard for a longer period can result in it offering inadequate protection.

Nighttime mouthguards can generally last much longer. However, patients with severe bruxism can require a new mouthguard in as little as six months. Apnea mouthguards can last for several years, according to WebMD. If you think that you might benefit from a custom mouthguard, call our office and find out more about this great orthotic device.
