How to Ensure Your Child's Oral Health Stays on Track
Posted on 3/8/2021 by SmileCOS Dentistry
As your child matures, their jaws and gums develop. Thus, ensuring that they follow effective oral health guidelines can prevent long-term gum diseases, tooth decay, and other oral health problems. Here's what you should keep in mind.
Take Care of Oral Hygiene from a Young Age
Even before your child has teeth, you should use a wet cloth to wipe their gums everytime after they eat their meals. This way, you can minimize the development of harmful bacteria. You should start brushing their teeth as soon as the first few begin to show. When they are old enough, teach them to brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once. Make sure to show them the correct way to floss their teeth.
ControlYour Child's Sugar Intake
Many processed foods, beverages, and candies have high amounts of sugar that enable the development of tooth decay-causing bacteria. Milk and formula also contain milder forms of sugar that can facilitate bacteria growth. This, it's best to minimize your child's sugar intake as much as you can.
Check Your Water Supply
Many utilities include some fluoride traces in the water supply to ensure healthy teeth and slow down decay. If your water supply does not include it, we recommend considering topical fluoride in addition to toothpaste.
Get Regular Dental Checkups
Getting regular dental checkups for your child can help detect potential oral health problems early on. In the case of early signs of tooth decay, we can also recommend preventive treatments, such as topical fluoride or sealants. Moreover, dental checkups also allow us to determine potential bite problems that can have long-lasting effects if left untreated.
