How Ibuprofen Can Ease Dental Pain Until We Can See You

One of the worst pains around is dental pain. That is why, at SmileCOS Dentistry, we recommend that you take an over-the-counter pain medication, such as Ibuprofen. Not only will the medicine lessen the pain, it will also reduce any inflammation.

What Is Ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medicine that soothes toothache pain until you we can repair your tooth. You should take two tablets every four to six hours until you can see us at SmileCOS Dentistry.

Alternatively, you might alternate acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (e.g., Advil) every three hours until we can help you. In addition, you can also take aspirin. However, don't leave the aspirin to dissolve on the tooth, as it is highly acidic. It is best to swallow the medicine with water. Take a couple tablets (a regular dose – not low dose) every four hours.

What Else Can I Do?

Besides taking an OTC pain medicine, you might swish some warm salt water in your mouth to clean out the infection and loosen any food debris. This approach can alleviate some of the pain and discomfort. Garlic, it has said, can also inhibit bacterial growth and relieve tooth pain. However, we usually don't recommend using garlic, as it also causes bad breath. While you can use clove or peppermint oil to soothe toothache pain, you have to be careful, as either oil can damage the soft tissues in the mouth.

Therefore, we suggest you contact us first when attempting any at-home remedies, especially if you have a pre-existing health condition. Normally, it is best to use the salt water rinse and stick with the Ibuprofen or a similar pain reliever.
