Caring For Your Teeth During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

While there is unbridled joy in bringing a baby into the world, there is no question your body changes significantly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Here is a guide to making sure your teeth stay as healthy as possible during your pregnancy and breastfeeding your newborn.

The Toll on Your Body

There is no question that pregnancy and breastfeeding take a tremendous toll on your body, including your teeth and gums. One of the ways pregnancy and breastfeeding impact your body is through the use of calcium. During your pregnancy, your baby must have calcium in order for their bones to grow and develop. If you are not eating enough calcium and vitamin D, your body will find the calcium in your teeth and bones to send to the growing baby. Also, the hormones that are elevated during pregnancy and breastfeeding increase your risk for gum disease.

What To Do While You Are Pregnant and Breastfeeding

The first step you need to take as soon as you find out you are pregnant - or when you begin thinking about conception - is to begin taking prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins are full of vitamins and minerals that keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Second, eat as healthy a diet as you possibly can, including extra servings of calcium. You will also need lean meat, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for your health and that of your baby.

Third, you need to continue visiting our dentist every six months throughout your pregnancy and breastfeeding. Our dentist can check up on your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

Fourth, if you suspect that you may have an issue with your teeth and gums during your pregnancy or breastfeeding, you need to call our dental office as soon as possible for an appointment.

If you are pregnant or you are considering becoming pregnant, why not contact our office to make an appointment with our dentist? We will be thrilled to see you!
