The National Institutes of Health estimates that one in every four people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes. Very few people have not been touched by cancer in their families or in their close friends. If your cancer is diagnosed early, you have an extremely good chance of survival. While you are undergoing cancer treatment, you do not need to neglect your teeth and gums. Here are some guidelines for caring for your teeth and gums during your cancer treatments.
The Affect Chemotherapy and Radiation Can Have on Your Teeth and Gums
Both chemotherapy and radiation treatments are meant to target those renegade cancer cells in your body that are causing your cancer. The treatments are looking to find and eliminate all of your cancer cells, but there are side effects.
One of the largest issues during chemotherapy and radiation treatment is that the treatments lower your ability to fight off infections. While this is a natural phenomenon due to the treatment, your teeth and gums can suffer. You will have a higher chance of getting gum disease and tooth decay because your immune system is not as strong as it usually is. Also, some chemotherapy medications cause you to have a dry mouth, which also increases your risk for dental issues and gum disease.
What Should I Do?
If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you need to make an appointment with our dentist. We can discuss any concerns you have with your teeth and gums. Together, we can help you come up with a plan for caring for your mouth during your cancer treatment.
Also, you can begin to alter your dental treatment plan before cancer treatment begins. You need to be sure that you are brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. Drink plenty of fluid to combat your dry mouth and help wash away bad bacteria. If you cannot eat due to nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, think about supporting your health with protein shakes or fruit and vegetable smoothies.
