Insurance Info

The Center for Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Dental Insurance is intended to help offset the cost that is associated with dental care. Unfortunately the thought of out of pocket expenses prevent many people from getting routine and necessary dental treatment. Keep in mind that many plans have limitations on the number of dental visits, xrays and treatment that are covered. Some plans will “down grade” treatment and only pay for the least expensive, not pay for preexisting conditions and may even exclude necessary treatment. When choosing a plan that fits yours and your family needs can be sometimes difficult and confusing. Because there are many types of plans, make sure the fine print is read before making that final decision. Here are just some examples of some dental plans to choose from.

Indemnity Plans – This plans allows you to select your own dentist. These plans are considered a fee for service and can come with limitations and co-payments. This basically means you pay a fee for your dental visit, you have an annual maximum yearly amount of coverage, and a deductible per person per calendar year.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) – A PPO is a plan that will give you a list of providers to choose from that are available to provide dental care at a reduced fee. These dentists are contracted with the insurance companies and will not charge the patient more than the contracted amount. You will see a discounted fee, but not a difference in the quality of work that is provided. Many offices sign up with this plan because it opens the door for more patients to be seen.

Direct Reimbursement Plans – This plan allows the employers to directly reimburse their employees for all of their dental services that they receive. HMO and DMO- These are managed health plans and assign you a specific dentist or facility. You must attend the assigned HMO to receive the benefits of the plan. These plans limit the Doctors that you can see and sometimes limit the treatment that can be given.

Discount Plans – These plans offer dental discounts if the doctors is contracted with that particular plan. For example if you sign up for Aetna Access and your provider is contracted you will receive the Aetna fee. Paper work is not filed and there is no dental insurance to bill. But payments for these plans are due at the time of service. So if your dental office charges $85.00 for a dental cleaning and Aetna’s fee is $58.00 you automatically save $27.00. These savings can really add up if there is quite a bit of treatment that needs to be completed. If you are just coming in for your twice a year Exams, cleanings and x-rays you will definitely see the savings in the premiums that you may be accustom to paying monthly.

Dental office staff cannot always answer specific questions about your dental benefits or predict the level of coverage for a particular procedure. But they can give you an “estimate” of what you may expect to pay. The best way to see what your exact out of pocket expense would be to do a pre-authorization. This is submitting a treatment plan of the work that needs to be completed. This will allow you to see what your benefits allow and what you’re out of pocket will be.

With any insurance company plan, look at all the facts and choose what best fits your family’s needs. If there are questions contact your dental staff or the insurance company that you may be considering to answer any concerns that you may have.
